One of the most awarded beverages in the world is defying the rules and setting the tone for the future of the food and beverage industry. I had the great opportunity this week to speak with Ryan Emmons, CEO and founder of Waiakea Springs premium bottled water to learn more about the incredible award-winning bottled water.

With the desire to change industry norms, Emmons founded Waiakea Springs – one of the first premium bottled waters to use 100% recycled plastics. One of the company’s major goals is to significantly reduce the carbon footprint made by the bottled water industry while offering consumers a luxurious and premium product.

Single-use plastic is an issue. We need to focus on changes in the beverage industry to more environmentally friendly practices.

Healthy

The water that is used in each bottle originates from one of the purest environments on Earth, Mauna Loa volcano on the Big Island. It is made as arctic moisture from the trade winds converts into rain or snow. Then, it is naturally filtered through 14,000 feet of porous lava rock that adds a unique blend of minerals. The water reaches the aquifer in less than 30 days, giving Waiakea its soft and sweet taste as well as its superior rating in virginality.

Sustainably

The Hawaiian principle “Malama I Ka ‘Aina” means “to respect and care for the land.” Waiakea Springs takes this phrase seriously as the company strives to preserve Hawai’i’s ecosystem. Their biggest environment initiative is using only 100% RPET post-consumer recycled plastic.  The company also utilizes low-emission shipping and actively participates in regional reforestation and other carbon-offset programs.

The world doesn’t need another premium bottled water, what it does need is a brand that causes a ripple effect in the industry through example.

Ethically

Waiakea was founded to create positive change for not only the environment, but also for those in need throughout the world. For every liter purchased, the company donates 1 week of clean water to communities in Africa and throughout the world through the organization Pump Aid. They also partner with the Kama’aha Education Initiative in advancing academic success for Native Hawaiians by providing the resources and education systems grounded in the past and present of Hawaii.

A refreshing view at Waiaha Estates.

It’s no wonder Waiakea is one of the most awarded beverages in the world. Quality is seen in every detail, from the water to the bottle it is packaged in. Not only is Waiakea making changes in the face of the food and beverage industry, but it is changing the way we drink water.
